Na primeira parte ela analisa a situação dos ex-escravos no Brasil do século XIX, mostrando que os libertos eram vistos com desconfiança pela elite, que enxergava neles os líderes de potenciais rebeliões de escravos. Após as grandes revoltas da década de 1830, vários foram deportados para a África ou pressionados a deixar o Brasil.
Na segunda parte, escreve sobre a comunidade de descendentes de brasileiros na Nigéria, destacando a luta de poder - eles quase se tornaram a elite econômica do país, até serem desalojados pelos colonizadores ingleses, que assumiram controle do país no fim do século XIX.
Outro antropólogo, Milton Guran, também andou por lá e fez um belo livros de fotos sobre os agudás. A que ilustra este post é uma celebração a Nosso Senhor do Bomfim, no Benin, com uma dança que os descendentes de brasileiros chamam de samba.

Já o embaixador Alberto Costa e Silva, mestre dos africanistas pátrios, têm vários livros sobre o assunto, como a biografia do Chachá e os ensaios de "Um Rio Chamado Atlântico".
Uma colega blogueira, a Ana Lúcia, disponibilizou belíssimas imagens sobre a arte e a cultura que nasceram dessa rica relação África-Brasil, acrescidas dos relatos da própria Ana, que é historiadora da arte e compartilha com este que vos escreve o entusiasmo pelo continente onde a humanidade começou sua turbulenta jornada por esta terra.
